A room temperature procedure for the manual determination of urea in seawater OMA
Goeyens, L.; Kindermans, N.; Yusuf, M.A.; Elskens, M..
Several earlier studies underpin the important role of dissolved organic matter and more particularly urea in phytoplanktonic nitrogen uptake fluxes. Generally, the determination of urea concentrations relies on the formation of an imidazolone-thiosemicarbizide complex, a complexation which requires very accurate temperature control when carried out at high temperature. It is also possible, however, to obtain reliable results with a room temperature procedure. The measured abundances for both complexation at high temperature (85 degree C, 20 min) and at ambient temperature (22 degree C, 72 h) are closely comparable. Lower values are observed for temperatures <10 degree C though. Moreover, a comparison of both techniques reveals similar precision...

Ammonia poisoning causes muscular but not liver damage in cattle Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Antonelli,A.C.; Torres,G.A.S.; Soares,P.C.; Mori,C.S.; Sucupira,M.C.A.; Ortolani,E.L..
Twelve steers were intraruminally administered a high dose (0.5g/kg BW) of urea to study the damage effect of ammonia poisoning on liver and/or muscles. Blood samples were collected to determine ammonia and activities of gammaGT, AST and CK. Eleven steers were successfully poisoned and treated properly, but one succumbed. Poisoned cattle showed high concentration of ammonia, and higher activities of AST and CK. The higher the ammonia, the greater were the activities of AST (r=0.59) and CK (r=0.61). The correlation between AST and CK was high and significant (r=0.80), but not between AST and gammaGT (r=0.19). The activities of AST and CK were higher after the beginning of the convulsive episodes due to ammonia poisoning. Those results showed that occurred...

Ammonia volatilization from nitrogen fertilizers applied to sugarcane straw Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Otto,Rafael; Zavaschi,Eduardo; Souza Netto,Gerson José Marquesi de; Machado,Bianca de Almeida; Mira,Acácio Bezerra de.
ABSTRACT Maintenance of crop residues over soil surface under conservational systems limits incorporation of nitrogen fertilizers into the soil. Application of urea over crop residues enhance N-NH3 volatilization losses, justifying the usage of urease inhibitors or N sources less susceptible to volatilization under such conditions. This study aimed to evaluate volatilization losses from N sources applied over sugarcane straw. A field trial was carried out in a sugarcane field in Iracemapolis, Sao Paulo on a Typic Kandiudox in June 2014. We used a complete block experimental design, with seven treatments and four replications. Treatments included Control [CO], ammonium nitrate [AN], NS30TM (ammonium nitrate-75% and ammonium sulfate-25% fused mixture)...

Ammonia volatilization in no-till system in the south-central region of the State of Paraná, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Fontoura,Sandra Mara Vieira; Bayer,Cimélio.
Ammonia (NH3) volatilization can reduce the efficiency of urea applied to the surface of no-till (NT) soils. Thus, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the magnitude of NH3 losses from surface-applied urea and to determine if this loss justifies the urea incorporation in soil or its substitution for other N sources under the subtropical climatic conditions of South-Central region of Paraná State, Brazil. The experiment, performed over four harvesting seasons in a clayey Hapludox followed a randomized block design with four replicates. A single dose of N (150 kg ha-1) to V5 growth stage of corn cultivated under NT system was applied and seven treatments were evaluated, including surface-applied urea, ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, urea with...

Roth,Marcella de Toledo Piza; Reis,Ricardo Andrade; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Siqueira,Gustavo Rezende; Pires,Aureliano José Vieira; Bertipaglia,Liandra Maria Abaker.
The objective of this was to evaluate the effect of chemical treatments with urea (3 or 5% DM) and anhydrous ammonia (3% DM) applied to the post-harvest hay residues of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu that contained different moisture contents (15, 25 or 30%). A randomized block design was used with eight treatments and four replications (defined as the bale layers within the hay stacks). The hay treated with 3% anhydrous ammonia and 15% moisture content reduced the levels of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from 84.3 to 79.1% and increased the in vitro digestibility of the dry matter (DM) from 37.3 to 55.5% compared to the control group. The variation in the moisture content did not significantly alter the action of ammonia, with mean values of 77.6% NDF...

Chemical treatment of roughage R. Bras. Zootec.
Pires,Aureliano José Vieira; Carvalho,Gleidson Giordano Pinto de; Ribeiro,Leandro Sampaio Oliveira.
Chemical treatment of roughage has been the aim of studies for a long time. However, until nowadays, many questions are arisen due to the efficiency of additives used in relation to the variation of answers, either in nutritive value of treated roughage or in performance of animals feed with diet containing such roughage. This revision will approach the main and most used products, which are anhydrous ammonia, urea, sodium hydroxide and calcium oxide. It has been noticed that ammonization (both for anhydrous ammonia and urea) has presented more efficient result in animal's performance when compared with sodium hydroxide or calcium oxide. However, regarding its nutritive value, both sodium hydroxide and calcium oxide have presented a higher efficiency in...

Cloning of putative ureG genes from Glomus intraradices and urease activities in tobacco arbuscular mycorrhizal roots Scientia Agricola
Takahashi,Daniele; Ditt,Renata Fava; Lambais,Marcio R..
Even though the major benefit of arbuscular mycorrhizae is the increased uptake of phosphate from the soil solution and translocation to the plant, changes in the activity of enzymes involved in nitrogen (N) metabolism have been detected in mycorrhizal roots. Using differential display of reverse-transcripts of tobacco roots not-inoculated or inoculated with Glomus intraradices (Gi), we have cloned two partial cDNAs (NtGi2 and NtGi3). The presence of a conserved CobW/HypB/UreG domain and phylogenetic analyses suggest that NtGi2 and NtGi3 encode isoforms of urease accessory protein G (ureG) highly similar to ureG from fungi. The steady state levels of the putative ureG transcripts were shown to be higher in roots colonized by Gi, as compared to...

Comparison of brown trout (Salmo trutta) reared in fresh water and sea water to freshwater rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) .1. Growth and nitrogen balance ArchiMer
Dosdat, Antoine; Metailler, Robert; Desbruyeres, Elisabeth; Huelvan, Christine.
Brown trout and rainbow trout (average weight 100 g) were reared in fresh water at 12 degrees C under the same conditions before transfer of brown trout to sea water, in order to compare nitrogen utilisation in the two species. Apparent protein digestibility (ADC), nitrogen (ammonia and urea) excretion, protein productive value (PPV) and actual observed nitro en mass balance were determined. Rainbow trout raised in fresh water had a higher growth rate (1.1 vs 0.8%. d(-1)), better food conversion ratio (0.7 vs 1.0), better ADC (91 vs 85%) and PPV (45 vs 35%) and lower ammonia excretion rates than brown trout reared in fresh water. Transferring brown trout to sea water induced lower PPV (30%) and ammonia and urea excretion. Salinity did not modify metabolic...

Contribution of dietary arginine to nitrogen utilisation and excretion in juvenile sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed diets differing in protein source ArchiMer
Tulli, F; Vachot, Christianne; Tibaldi, E; Fournier, Vincent; Kaushik, Sadasivam.
The role of dietary arginine in affecting nitrogen utilisation and excretion was studied in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed for 72 days with diets differing in protein sources (plant protein-based (PM) and fish-meal-based (FM)). Fish growth performance and nitrogen utilisation revealed that dietary Arg surplus was beneficial only in PM diets. Dietary Arg level significantly affected postprandial plasma urea concentrations. Hepatic arginase activity increased (P < 0.05) in response to dietary Arg surplus in fish fed plant protein diets; conversely ornithine transcarbamylase activity was very low and inversely related to arginine intake. No hepatic carbamoyl phosphate synthetase III activity was detected. Dietary arginine levels did...

Contribution of nitrogen from sugarcane harvest residues and urea for crop nutrition Scientia Agricola
Fortes,Caio; Vitti,André Cesar; Otto,Rafael; Ferreira,Danilo Alves; Franco,Henrique Coutinho Junqueira; Trivelin,Paulo Cesar Ocheuze.
Sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) harvested without burning provides a substantial amount of remains (trash) on soil profiles which can be decomposed and release nutrients contributing to reduce fertilizer needs. The contribution of nitrogen (N) from sugarcane plant residues and fertilizer in sugarcane nutrition was assessed. Plant cane treatments were micro plots of 15N-labeled urea, sugarcane trash and root system; the last two to simulate the previous crop residues incorporated into the soil after crop renewal. For ratoons, N-ammonium nitrate (N-AN) micro plots, 150 kg ha-1 of N-AN and control (0 kg ha-1) were set up to evaluate the contribution of trash in N supply and quantify the effects of N-fertilizer on N-trash mineralization. Contribution of several nitrogen sources to growth of Alexandrium catenella during blooms in Thau lagoon, southern France ArchiMer
Collos, Y; Vaquer, A; Laabir, M; Abadie, Eric; Laugier, Thierry; Pastoureaud, Annie; Souchu, Philippe.
A monitoring program with a weekly sampling frequency over a 15-month period indicates that urea concentrations above a certain threshold level may trigger the blooms of Alexandrium catenella in Thau lagoon. However, urea concentrations were also sometimes related to ammonium and dissolved organic nitrogen concentrations, indicating that the role of urea may not be a direct one. An original approach is used to assess the relative contribution of several nitrogen sources (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, urea) to growth of A. catenella by comparing nitrogen uptake rates to nitrogen-based growth rates estimated from dilution experiments during four blooms over a 4-year period (2001-2004) in Thau lagoon. Nitrate and nitrite contributed 0.1-14% and 0.1-5%...
